A primer on nonprofit law in New Hampshire. This seminar is designed to help you empower your nonprofit organizations by providing expert guidance on the laws governing the incorporation, tax-exempt status, and governance of nonprofit organizations. Whether you represent nonprofits as clients or serve on a board, join our experienced faculty, and colleagues from around the state, for the most up-to-date information on issues and developments affecting the nonprofit law sector.
This program will include:
- A presentation by Mary Ann Dempsey, the new Director of the NH Charitable Trust Unit, on the CTU’s priorities for 2025
- Nuts and bolts of creating a charitable organization, the required and recommended documents, holding an organizational meeting, registering with the Charitable Trusts Unit, applying to the IRS for recognition of tax-exempt status, managing any endowment assets, and preventing loss of 501(c)(3) status
- Liability hot topics, including board fiduciary duties, conflicts of interests, and other legal obligations that board officers and directors often do not appreciate, and legal counsel must be prepared to provide guidance
- Ethical issues related to lawyers acting as counsel to or director of nonprofit entities
- Employment law issues pertaining to nonprofit organizations
- Handling changes of status/mergers and acquisitions of nonprofits
- Update on the status of nonprofits in NH
- What to do when things go wrong (executive / board misconduct, criminal prosecution, misappropriation/misuse of funds)
