The transition back into the community after serving time in jail or prison Is filled with obstacles. Finding a place where you can live, a way to get your medication and other health care services, access to public benefits, a job, and even an identification card can be nearly insurmountable tasks, especially while also having to navigate the requirements and restrictions you face as conditions of your release. These barriers to successful reentry disproportionately harm people with disabilities—including people with physical and cognitive/intellectual disabilities, and people with mental health or chronic medical conditions. We will shed light on the problems people face to successfully reintegrate into the community after incarceration, and how lawyers can help, both through direct legal advocacy and by using the disability law to promote reentry services that reduce barriers and improve outcomes for releasing individuals.
